How to travel with freediving flippers
2023-05-22
Freediving flippers (usually made of plastic, fiberglass or carbon fiber) are expensive, very fragile and usually one of the more expensive pieces of equipment for freedivers.
Long flippers can make travel and storage a real hassle.
Most long flippers will not fit in a standard length bag or suitcase.
For traveling with long flippers, there are really only two options:
1) Use adjustable freediving flippers. Adjustable flippers allow you to unscrew the flippers to reduce the total length of the flippers. This makes packing into luggage much easier.
2) Use a freediving flipper bag (bag or box, case, etc.) designed for carrying long flippers. A suitable freediving flipper bag is usually 40 inches or more long (so it can accommodate almost any long freediving flipper) and the inside of the bag is usually padded (so that expensive flippers don't break and get damaged during the trip).
If planning to fly and bring long freediving flippers with you; it is highly recommended to invest in a freediving flipper bag to protect the flippers from airport security personnel and to carry the rest of your luggage along with you to check in.
Also, it is a risky decision to carry your freediving flippers on the plane as carry-on baggage, as this is against the rules on most airlines because the length of freediving flippers is much longer than the maximum carry-on baggage size on regular airlines.
